A new milestone for the Port of Algeciras: the last November 30, 2022 received the 1,000th megaship since this type of container ship began plying the seas at the end of 2013.
The container ship that had the honor of being part of this milestone was the Triple E Mary Maersk, pioneer’s twin Maersk McKinney Möller, which arrived on time at APM Terminals Algeciras.
In the last five years, the number of megaships has increased considerably. Megaships are usually container ships with a capacity of 15,000 TEU or more..
During the past year 2022, the terminals of the Port of Algeciras operated 128 megaships. This trend has meant that the terminals of the Port of Algeciras are now working with these giants on a regular scale of 5 leading shipping companies: APL, CMA CGM, HMM, Maersk Line, MOL, Cosco and MSC.
Looking back at the predecessors of these super-ships, the Maersk E-Class, the first ones with dimensions of almost 400 meters in length and close to 60 meters in beam, started sailing and climbing in the Port of Algeciras in 2006..
Since then, there has been a remarkable growth in capacity, currently up to 24,000 tons of HMM’s “Algeciras” series, which made its first call in its namesake city last summer 2021.
The fantastic figure of 1,000 scales is the result of a public and private commitment that more than ten years ago was ahead of its time to improve the docks. with draughts, fenders and cranes capable of operating effectively.
In the words of the president of the Port of Algeciras, Gerardo Landaluce, ”the Port of Algeciras is one of the preferred ports of call for the captains of large ships, according to the perception indicators that we periodically collect from the APBA”.
